The Ultimate Guide to Hangang Park Picnic and Tent Rental Culture

If you visit South Korea during the spring or autumn, one of the most iconic local experiences is spending a relaxing day at Hangang Park. For locals and travelers alike, a Han River (Hangang) picnic is the ultimate way to enjoy the city's natural beauty and vibrant outdoor culture.

From renting tents by the riverside to ordering delivery food directly to your picnic mat, here is a complete guide to understanding and enjoying the Hangang picnic experience without any confusion.

Part 1: What is Hangang Picnic Culture?

Hangang Park stretches across Seoul, with popular spots like Yeouido, Ttukseom, and Banpo. The core of this culture is the ability to relax, eat, and enjoy the scenery in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

1. Tent Rental Culture

  • How it works: You do not need to bring your own equipment. Near the park entrances (especially in Yeouido and Ttukseom), private rental shops offer complete picnic packages.

  • What you get: A tent, a waterproof mat, blankets, a small table, and a bluetooth speaker or pillows.

  • Cost: Usually between 15,000 and 30,000 KRW for a 3 to 4-hour rental, depending on the package.

Part 2: How to Use the Delivery Zone (도깨비존 - Dokkaebi Zone)

One of the most surprising things for foreigners is the "delivery food" culture at the Han River. You can order fried chicken, pizza, and tteokbokki directly to the park.

  • Step 1: Find the Delivery Zone (배달존): The park is divided into designated delivery zones where you can meet the delivery riders.

  • Step 2: Place the Order: Use local apps like Baemin or Yogiyo. If you do not have a Korean phone number, ask your hotel or use an assisted ordering service.

  • Step 3: Meet the Driver: The driver will text or call you to meet at the designated Delivery Zone (e.g., Yeouido Zone 1).

Part 3: Important Rules and Etiquette

To avoid fines or cultural misunderstandings, keep the following regulations in mind:

1. The 7 PM Tent Rule (그늘막 텐트 철거)

  • Rule: According to Seoul city regulations, all tents must have at least two sides open at all times.

  • Time Limit: Tents must be taken down by 7:00 PM (summer) and 6:00 PM (winter). After this time, you can only use picnic mats (돗자리).

2. Leave No Trace

  • Rule: You must clean up all your trash. There are recycling and trash sorting stations located throughout the park. Separate your food waste, plastic, and general trash before throwing them away.

Part 4: Useful Korean Phrases

  • "Ten-teu dae-yeo hae-ju-se-yo" means "Please rent a tent."

  • "Che-kin bae-dal-hae-ju-se-yo" means "Please deliver fried chicken."

  • "Sseu-le-gi be-ri-neun got-eun eo-di-ye-yo?" means "Where is the trash disposal area?"

  • "Gamsahamnida" means "Thank you."

If one's pursuit of pleasure in a public space breaches established rules and etiquette, it becomes a fault that harms others. Therefore, one must always respect public regulations.
