Miryang Arirang is a representative native folk song of the Yeongnam region that has been passed down mainly around the Miryang area in Gyeongsangnam-do, and it is designated as a Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage. Counted as one of Korea's three major Arirang songs along with Jeongseon Arirang and Jindo Arirang, it is highly familiar to the entire nation due to its powerful and intuitive opening lyrics: "Nal jom boso, nal jom boso, nal jom boso" (Look at me, look at me, look at me).
Compared to Arirang songs from other regions, this folk song is characterized by its exceptionally fast and cheerful rhythm. Because it is sung joyfully and energetically to the rhythmic cadence of the Semachi jangdan, it was primarily sung to liven up the atmosphere at festivals or social gatherings. The lyrics richly reflect local narratives, such as Yeongnamru—a famous landmark in Miryang—and the tragic legend of Arang, a maiden who died trying to protect her chastity.
Although it began to spread widely as a popular folk song in the late 1920s, it carries a deep historical background of overcoming modern Korean history alongside the nation. During the Japanese colonial period, independence fighters adapted this lively tune into the "Liberation Army Arirang" to embody their aspirations for independence. To this day, it continues to be passed down as a precious cultural heritage that vividly represents the joys and sorrows of the common people.
The fundamental mind is like the original sun, highly and brilliantly bright. In humanity, Heaven and Earth become one.
