Jindo Arirang

Jindo Arirang is a representative native folk song of the southern region that has been passed down in Jindo, Jeollanam-do, and it is designated as Jeollanam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 64. Counted as one of Korea's three major Arirang songs alongside Jeongseon Arirang and Miryang Arirang, it is widely loved for its uniquely flavorful refrain that begins with "Ari-Arirang, Suri-Surirang, Arariga nanne."

This song is based on Yukjabaegitori, the distinct musical idiom of Jeolla Province folk songs. It features clear contrasts between vibrating notes, flat notes, and breaking notes, characterized by a rich, soulful singing style that mimics the deep, pressed vocal techniques of Pansori. Notably, because it has a wide vocal range and moves dynamically through each measure, it boasts a unique charm that is both majestic and full of vitality.

Sung to the rhythmic cadence of the Semachi jangdan, Jindo Arirang is a song where sorrowful grief and wise humor coexist. When sung solo, it becomes a long, mournful melody steeped in han (deep sorrow) and laments over one's life. However, when performed responsively and via improvisation among a group at a gathering, it possesses a surprising twist, boosting the communal spirit with a tempo more rapid and cheerful than any other song.

Ryeon (Refining) is the act of forging. Only by forging a hundred times and removing all crude impurities can pure, refined gold be formed.
