Jeongseon Arirang

Jeongseon Arirang (also known as Arari) is a representative native Korean folk song passed down in the Jeongseon region of Gangwon Province, and it is designated as Gangwon State Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 1. Counted as one of Korea's three major Arirang songs along with Jindo Arirang and Miryang Arirang, it is highly evaluated for best preserving the primitive emotions and original musical roots of the Korean people.

Its origin dates back approximately 600 years to the early Joseon Dynasty. Following the fall of the Goryeo Dynasty, loyal scholars who went into hiding in the mountainous regions of Jeongseon composed poems expressing their longing for their hometowns and their devotion to their king. As these verses blended with the voices of the local residents, they developed into a sorrowful Arirang.

Musically, it features the Menarijo style, which is a sorrowful yet simple melody characteristic of mountainous regions. It consists of Gin Arari (Long Arari), which is drawn-out and slow, and Yeokkeum Arari (Woven Arari), where numerous lyrics are densely packed and sung at a rapid pace. The diverse emotions experienced in everyday life—such as the joys and sorrows of commoners living in a harsh natural environment, love between men and women, and the hardships of married life at the in-laws—are fully captured in its rich and humorous lyrics.

As an elephant in the battlefield withstands arrows shot from bows, so shall I endure abuse.
