Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" is originally a Romantic art song depicting a literary heroine's prayer rather than a traditional Catholic hymn.

Franz Schubert (1797–1828), an Austrian composer celebrated as the "King of Lieder," is a foundational figure of the early Romantic era. Despite his short 31-year lifespan, he composed over 600 vocal works, leaving a profound legacy through his exceptional ability to seamlessly merge poetic text with expressive melody.

He composed this specific piece in 1825 based on Sir Walter Scott's epic poem "The Lady of the Lake." Originally titled "Ellens Gesang III," the music vividly conveys the deep desperation of the exiled heroine, Ellen Douglas, as she prays to the Virgin Mary for protection.

Although written with German lyrics, the opening phrase "Ave Maria" naturally inspired its later adaptation with the traditional Latin "Hail Mary" prayer. This integration of Schubert's original German composition with the Latin text established the universally recognized masterpiece performed today.
