Vladimir Vavilov (1925–1973) was a Russian lutenist and composer who shaped modern classical repertoire by publishing his own works under the names of Renaissance and Baroque masters. This historical deception is most evident in his globally renowned "Ave Maria," which was falsely attributed to the Italian composer Giulio Caccini (1551–1618) and remains widely recognized under Caccini's name today.
Recorded and released around 1970, this "Ave Maria" is an entirely original standalone composition. Rather than superimposing a melody over an existing classical instrumental work like Gounod's piece, it is a 20th-century neo-Baroque creation built upon a descending bassline, expressing intense sorrow and profound spiritual yearning.
Unlike Schubert's or Gounod's versions, which utilize either a poetic narrative or the complete traditional Catholic prayer, Vavilov's piece strips the text down to its absolute minimum. The song's theme centers on a solemn, continuous, and desperate plea to the Virgin Mary, relying entirely on the emotional weight and tension of the melancholic melody rather than complex lyricism.
