Charles Gounod (1818–1893) was a prominent French Romantic composer whose deep religious devotion—having even studied theology and considered the priesthood—profoundly shaped his musical career. This spiritual influence is most evident in his sacred works, particularly his globally renowned "Ave Maria."
Released as a vocal piece in 1859, Gounod's "Ave Maria" superimposes a new melody over Johann Sebastian Bach's "Prelude No. 1 in C major," an instrumental work composed over 130 years earlier. Rather than depicting a literary narrative, it directly combines this classical instrumental foundation with the traditional Catholic prayer praising the Virgin Mary and interceding for sinners.
Unlike Schubert's version, which was originally adapted from a German poem, Gounod's piece adopted the traditional Latin "Ave Maria" lyrics directly from its initial vocal publication. Today, it remains one of the most widely recognized and revered religious vocal pieces worldwide.
